Review - Crazy Penis

Feb. 6th, 2009 | 03:09 pm

Lead singer for Lychee Martini, Nicole Shenko, seemed in a vibrant mood when we arrived at Billboard, looking quite fetching in a black and red ensemble, her hair swept at the sides. The lyrics coming through felt a little laden in cheese, however most people seemed to be lapping it up as a smooth start to the night. Martini had quite a cabaret feel, and yet the funk and cross-genre rhythms made it for a nice, if a little somber introduction to the night. All in all, Lychee were a good warm up, yet as much as they were tight, there was somwething very hotel-bar feel about them, with little movement on the stage.

Review - Future Music Festival - Perth 2008

Mar. 4th, 2008 | 02:05 pm

Absconding from a nearby East Perth residence, we arrived just in time to see Elite Force in full flight. Simply amazing. His mixes were perfect, his selection was second to none and the energy he displayed behind the decks was commendable. It’s always great to see someone playing who is enjoying themselves as much as the crowd, and as the first set of the day, it was a remarkable introduction to the festival - yet it was, upon reflection, the best set of the entire festival.

Review - Big Day Out - Perth 2008

Big Day Out. For some, the day of the year, for others, it was an exercise in “what the hell am I doing here again?” - but this years had more than a few moments, nonetheless.

Review - Summadayze 2008

Despite the heat, Chromeo absolutely killed it on the main stage. This duo proved that good things really do come in pairs. Covering a range of old and new tracks, with D-Thugg pumping out his vocoded lyrics via a talkbox, the pair had the crowd eating out of their hands. From Fancy Footwork, to You’re so Gangster and all their best in between, funked it up good and proper. As the set wound down, and the lads walked off stage, chants of “Chromeo! woah woah!” erupted, and they came back to with 100% for their finale, leaving a large number of people deeply satisfied.

Review - Breakfest 2007

It was hot. How does it go? Damn hot. So hot, I could have done a little crotch pot cooking -and that’s nice if you’re with a lady … but not….oh, wait, that’s been done before.

Really, though, who cared, besides the idiots who didn’t wear enough sunscreen? With arguably the best line-up in years, it was those that didn’t brave the 47c heat that missed out. Not even the sight of Prizzy standing behind the decks with Beauty School Dropout, in full denim jeans, sweating his ass off could damp the enthusiasm of those standing under the shade-cloth - and damn but if they didn’t play a great set regardless. Wish and Ben Mac played a set straight after, and those brave enough to dance in direct radiation were flinging their sweat like monkeys flinging .. Errm. Nevermind.

Review - Parklife 2007

Oct. 12th, 2007 | 02:13 pm

With quick entry to the event, and a near lack of a line even at a peak entry period, Parklife started off with a bang. A huge area, multiple tents, plenty of room for everyone - this looked set to be one of the best starts to the summer festival season for quite some time.

Review - Goldie

Dec. 6th, 2006 | 10:12 am

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

It was another return of one of the old school legends, that had the interest of punters piqued, when Goldie returned to Perth on Saturday night to play at Rises Revolution night.

A strange crowd presented itself upon entry - a mix of dnb heads, rise goers and the odd strange people who seem to have merely wandered in off the streets gave off a fairly strange vibe, but as hit the stage a few heads were already getting into it.

Review - DJ Randall

Sep. 5th, 2006 | 10:00 am

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

It was with eagerness that a crowd of dnb heads turned up at the Hyde Park Hotel to witness the return of old school favourite, DJ Randall, to Perth last Saturday night.

Having unfortunately missed most of the local boys sets due to prior engagements, it was heard that most of them stuck to a more cross-time selection by laying quite a few older tunes mixed in with the new. Its always a disappointment when sets by the local lads are missed, as often the case that they are standout performances in the night, but reports back are that Muller, Rintel and all played great sets.

For a year now, the Rise nightclub has been presenting a different face to its Saturday night lineup. Review - Ministry Of Sound - Perth 2006

Stepping away from dnb for the evening, Greg Packer pulled out his hiphop and stepped up to the decks. Watching Packer playing old school hiphop is always a treat, and the fact that he was able to run for an extra half an hour, dishing out classic after classic was a pleasant surprise.

Review - Madhatters Ball 2006

It has been the event of the year for over a decade, and this year, the annual go crazy event that is Madhatters, held at Ambar, lived up to its expectations.

Arriving early for a pre-party, the look of things to come was presented when we were greeted by the door girl, who was representing with a Manchester United kit, somewhere not far off in the distance one of the ref’s blew their whistle – and it was then this writer knew the night had only just begun.

Review - DJ Bailey

Apr. 24th, 2006 | 09:48 pm

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

Revolution @ Rise played host to a special event last Saturday, with renowned dnb DJ Bailey being brought to our shores for an event that was looked forward to in dnb circles. Not being traditional dnb territory for touring internationals, the gig was a great mould breaking event, and as the Rise crew begin opening their territory to more diverse styles than their traditional fare, last Saturday was a great taste of a successful experiment.

Review - Heavyweight Soundz - LTJ Bukem + Tayo + Friction

A return by LTJ Bukem to Perth, with an accompanying performance by two other scene heavy weights, Friction and Tayo, is always to be anticipated. Heavy Weight Soundz at Club Capitol last Friday night was indeed anticipated by the dnb crew, and as the night lead on, the evening proved to be exactly what was promised.

Review - Inland Knights

Mar. 14th, 2006 | 09:33 pm

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

Inland Knights are a near household name for house fans and DJs specialising in the unbroken side of electronica. With almost every house DJ of any form of reputation owning at least one of their singles, and boasting a rather more than credible production and performance past, the night was set for a completely off the hook event.

Review - Hallucinogen

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

Psy-trance, has never even really hit my register. I have always been a firm believer that if it was even remotely touched by the “Trance” moniker, that it was probably going to sound repetitive and probably wasn’t worth checking out – it was just that stuff that hippies listen to out in the bush.

After attending last Friday nights gig, I stand corrected, and more than a little chastened.

Review - Elite Force

Oct. 25th, 2005 | 08:37 pm

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

It seems only a short time since Elite Force, the creative mind behind a new wave of innovative tech-orientated breaks, last visited PE to display why exactly it is that a good party is not always to found in tried and tested formulas.

With a breakbeat scene that is often heavily orientated towards the “party-breaks” end of the spectrum, and with punters more familiar with funky styled and go-jump beats, the prospect of a tech orientated evening was promising.

Review - Parklife 2005

Sep. 28th, 2005 | 07:55 pm

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

In the run up to the summer festival series, upon seeing the lineup for Parklife, it was a joy to behold so many quality acts on the one lineup. Looking for all intents and purposes as a mini rendition of the seminal Breaksfest, Parklife had all the frills of the Belvoir event plus the added bonus of catering for those of a more house orientated persuasion. The fresh lineup coupled with a fresh new venue in the form of The ‘Deen and the associated block curtailed of traffic offered something unique to the Northbridge area, and it was as much the uniqueness of the venue and associated lineup as it was the big names attending that drew the crowds in their hundreds.

Review - Bumpa - Phantom Beats

Nov. 10th, 2004 | 12:19 pm

Originally published at Fletcher Andersen. Please leave any comments there.

With the promise of some of the best of local breakbeat talent alongside the undeniably infamous breaks legends, Phantom Beats, the scene was set last Saturday eve at Heat Nightclub for those inclined to snare laced drums. As the night began, the fourth iteration of the Bumpa series presented itself with ferocity, startling punters with its fresh take on the nuevo-breakbeat scene. From its initial inception last August, and following on the footsteps of September’s local showcase, as well as a prior staunch performance by the mighty Stanton Warriors, Bumpa has quickly become the monthly gig of choice for breaks fanatics.
